Powerman 5000's latest Album Builders of the Future comes out May 27th 2014!

Powerman 5000 (often abbreviated to PM5K) was formed in 1991 by frontman and only original remaining member Spider One (real name Michael Cummings and younger half brother of Rob Zombie). Powerman 5000 started out as a solo act as Spider One bought a cheap drum machine and 4 track home studio and recorded Much Evil with a local producer after dropping out of Art School.

The band started out as a Nu Metalband sounding similar to Linkin Park with their mix of rap and rock and over time their sound has changed.

Starting out as a local success in the Boston, Massachusetts area two indie albums were created in 1994 and 1995, titled True Force and The Blood-Splat Rating System.

In 1996 building upon their success they toured on the second stage of Ozzfest and appeared in an episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

In 1997 they released the album Mega!! Kung Fu Radio under Dreamworks Records which is a remastering of their previous independent album The Blood-Splat Rating System.

In 1999 they got their biggest commercial break with the release of their album Tonight the Stars Revolt!. With Tonight the Stars Revolt! was a big change in their sound and also their appearance. Creating an awesome fusion of science fiction and what Spider One calls "Action Rock".

Tonight the Stars Revolt! had some of their biggest singles so far such as "When Worlds Collide", "Nobody's Real" and "Supernova Goes Pop". When touring in this era of the band they would dress up in spacesuits in accordance with their science fiction action rock sound and appearance.

In 2001 a follow up album was scheduled to release in August 2001. A few weeks before its release though Anyone for Doomsday? was canceled before the release. The exact reasons are unknown and some have said it may had to do with the events of September 2011 and the negative title of the album. Spider has also said in interviews he wanted to do something new and fresh and that the album sounded too much like the previous album.

Although the album was canceled, years later it was eventually re-released on Spider One's own label Megatronic Records. One of the tracks off the album "Bombshell" became one of their biggest hits which got a lot of exposure on radio stations worldwide and have often performed the song live.

Not long after resulted in a change to the band's lineup due as longtime members Dorian 27 (Dorian Heartsong) and A13 (Allen Pahanish) left the band.

One of their biggest hits and mainstream exposures was a remake of the 1980's club hit "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The remake was featured in the soundtrack and closing credits for the 2001 comedy film Zoolander.

In 2003 they returned with a revamped look and new sound. Dropping the science fiction sound and look, they took on a more modern rock/punk sound and appearance. In 2003 they released Transform. "Action" and "Free" were some of their biggest hits off their new album and some of their biggest hits of the band so far.

Inexplicably in the middle of their tour, their record label Dreamworks Records was bought out by Interscope Records, and stopped promoting the band. For unknown reasons they weren't asked to move to Interscope Records and in 2005 Powerman 5000 released a rarities album in 2005 titled "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

In 2005 they signed with DRT entertainment who released their most punk fueld and sounding album so far "Destroy What You Enjoy".

in 2009 they released "Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere" after releasing singles "Super Villain", "V is for Vampire" and "Horror Show" on their myspace and amazon. A music video was also created for the single Super Villain as well. With this album was a return to their science fiction and metal roots, once again donning spacesuits and costumes for their live performances as well.

In 2009 Powerman 5000 re-released the album Anyone for Doomsday? after the legal battle surrounding the album.

In 2011 they released a covers album of popular 80's and new wave songs by such artists as David Bowie, Devo, Van Halen, INXS and more. The album was titled Copies, Clones & Replicants.

On May 27th, 2014 they will released their latest album "Builders of the Future". So far the only single released so far is "How to be a Human", which expands upon their science fiction, action rock sound.

Powerman 5000 started out as a Nu Metal band, sounding more like Linkin Park than anything else (mixing rap and rock) as they grew it became more hard rock and metal but with some hip-hop, rap and punk influences.

True Force, The Blood-Splat Rating System and Mega!! Kung Fu Radio are their Nu metal beginnings, sounding very different from their later work. With Tonight the Stars Revolt! and Anyone for Doomsday? having a much harder rock sound to them (and look as well with their costumes/space suits).

Transform was a departure from their previous work as they ditched their spacesuits/costumes and had a more rock and punk vibe to the sound. With Destory What You Enjoy was a very punk inspired album, with a completely different look and sound to it.

The Good, the bad and the Ugly Vol.1 is an album containing a lot of their early work and unreleased tracks which is a good record of how their sound has changed and progressed over time.

Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere was a return to their Science Fiction roots (as well as touring with spacesuits and costumes for the first time in several years) with some past hip-hop and nu metal influences as well.

Copies, Clones & Replicants are remakes of popular New Wave and 80's songs but done in the style of heavy metal.

With Builders of the Future, although I dont have much to go on so far, it seems to be going back to their Science Fiction, action rock/metal sound but taking it one step further.

Although not much has been released or shown of their new album, their single "How to be a Human" which I've seen performed live sounds amazing. A lot of people have worked on the album as well, including past members as well as new members recently added.

From what I can tell they are taking their unique Action and Science Fiction Rock and taking it even further then before and forming it into something incredible, amazing and awesome. As Spider has said "We are taking off where 'Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere' left off. We are not trying to reinvent the wheel this time. Just trying to make the wheel bigger and louder!"

The band sometimes gets criticism for going through a lot of lineup/band changes but that is just the nature of the business and as Spider said in an interview, just like the Avengers they change their lineup every couple of years.
